The Retrospective, November 9, 2024

On November 4th thru 22, 2024, the College of Marin (Kentfield, California) dedicated their new Art Gallery, in the Performance Art Building, to the one-person showing of the "The Displaced".  The collages were some of the last pieces of artwork that Kent produced in his long career as a professional artist. He was also a Professor of Art for 31 years at the College of Marin.  The book, "The Displaced, R. Kent Rupp", authored by me, was published in 2022 showcasing all 16 collages. I am grateful to the College and to the Curator, Chris West, for mounting this show and honoring Kent's legacy.

To celebrate this first showing of Kent's work since his death in 2021, I curated a retrospective showcasing a vast body of work from 1950s thru 2021.  These were the artworks which were in our private collection. There were over 1500 pieces of artwork total. The entirety of his work was professionally appraised, archived and submitted to the Library of Congress in Washington DC. A project that took over two years to complete.

The Retrospective was held in his studio-gallery, connected to our home, in Northern California on November 11, 2024. Many invited guests including family, friends, colleagues and collectors all gathered to honor Kent and to finally give their farewells.  Several of the pieces have never been seen in public before. And to curate this group was bittersweet.

Our home was designed by both of us and built to showcase art. There is a large open area connected to the main house which we called 'the studio-gallery'.  This retrospective was hung in the large studio-gallery and in every room on the entry level. All artworks hanging in the retrospective are documented in this book, along with a brief history of each period. They will continue to hang through 2025. It is only a small sampling of the breadth and diversity of this remarkable artist.

Included are paintings, drawings, watercolors and prints. I focused on three groupings: 1) The Early Works, from 1950-1970,  2)The Mid-Career Group, from 1980s and 90s, and  3) The Late-Career Group from 2000 until his death in 2021.

This was a painstaking job of pure love. Going through his extensive catalog from beginning to end and selecting which pieces best represented these periods was difficult. I was always hearing Kent's voice sharing with me his ideas. He loved art, his home and sanctuary, animals and friends, philosophy and physics and a pure passion for classical music.  I sense all of these when surrounding by his art.
